Last week, a single liquid restaking token (LRT) pool controlled 34% of all restaked ETH. That’s not decentralization. That’s a single point of failure wearing a shiny new hat. The project? A darling of the bull market, raising $100 million at a $5 billion valuation. The narrative? 'Shared security for all.' The reality? A concentration of power that would make a traditional banker blush.
I’ve been here before. In 2020, I watched Compound’s governance token distribution morph into a plutocracy. Now, I see the same pattern emerging in the restaking ecosystem—EigenLayer’s grand experiment. The promise is elegant: use your staked ETH to secure multiple protocols simultaneously. The execution, however, is a slow drip of centralization masked by technical jargon. True ownership begins where the server ends. But here, the server is just a different landlord.
The Architecture of Illusion
EigenLayer lets you restake your staked ETH—essentially, double-duty for your validator. You deposit stETH or other liquid staking tokens (LSTs) into EigenLayer’s contract, then choose which "Actively Validated Services" (AVSs) to secure. In return, you earn additional yield. Simple, right? But the devil lives in the delegation graph.
To restake, most users don’t run their own operator. They delegate to an operator—a centralized entity like a large pool or a professional node operator. The top five LRT operators now control over 70% of all restaked ETH. That’s worse than Lido’s dominance on the base staking layer. And Lido at least has a distributed set of node operators; here, the operators are often the same handful of firms running multiple AVSs. Debate is the compiler for better consensus. Instead, we’ve compiled silence.
The Governance Trap
During my time auditing Compound’s governance mechanics in DeFi Summer, I learned that token-weighted voting inevitably favors whales. EigenLayer’s governance is no different—but it’s worse. The native EIGEN token (yes, there’s a token) controls key parameters: which AVSs are admitted, how slashing conditions are defined, and what penalties apply. Early token distribution heavily favored insiders and institutional backers. Retail users who restake their ETH receive no governance power. They are silent farmers of yield, not active participants.

A single large operator with a software bug can bring down dozens of AVSs. Compare that to the Bitcoin ethos—each node verifies independently, no delegation. Restaking encourages delegation concentration because users want the highest yield, which often comes from the largest, most ’reliable’ operator. The network effect rewards centralization.
Furthermore, the LRT tokens themselves—like Renzo’s ezETH or Ether.fi’s weETH—are now being used in DeFi as collateral. They are themselves leveraged. If a slashing event triggers a depeg, the entire DeFi house of cards trembles. We saw this with stETH during the Curve crisis. We’ll see it again, but the stakes are higher. True ownership begins where the server ends, but restaking connects servers in a web of dependencies that no one fully understands.
My Time in the Trenches
In 2021, I pivoted to NFT marketplaces and learned that social equity is not a nice-to-have—it’s a structural requirement for resilience. The male-dominated culture I fought then is mirrored in today’s restaking discourse: a small group of power users and VCs decide the rules, while the majority just provides liquidity.
